THE FLOWERS OF WAR is a thrilling wartime epic starring Academy Award® Winner Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, The Fighter) and directed by master filmmaker Zhang Yimou (House of Flying Daggers, Hero).
The year is 1937 and the Chinese city of Nanking is aflame. As the final pockets of Chinese resistance are crushed, the Japanese relentlessly advance. Driven from their homes, thousands flood the streets, desperate to flee the city.
In the chaos we meet a group of Chinese schoolgirls trying to make it to the safety of their church, John (Bale), a civilian trying to escape the city with his life, and a band of colorful young courtesans seeking refuge. When fate throws them together at the cathedral in the heart of the city, they form an unlikely alliance under the most extreme of circumstances.
Bale delivers a towering performance as the conflicted American who, when given the chance to flee, dons the robes of a priest and vows to defend the innocent schoolgirls in his charge. As the danger outside spills into the church and the extreme becomes the impossible, only an act of grace will keep them safe. Based on true events, THE FLOWERS OF WAR takes us on an epic journey to the soaring heights of the human spirit.
